An apparatus for sampling aqueous sewer effluents containing water immiscible liquid impurities comprises a pump 6 for sucking the effluent into a hydrostatic separator which includes a bell-shaped vessel 13 inside an opentopped container 12, a discharge pipe 14 being provided for leading the immsicible liquid into a receiving vessel 16. As applied to the sampling of refinery effluent in which liquid hydrocarbons are present a filter 4 is arranged to float on the surface of the effluent 2 flowing in a sewer 1 and is connected via a pipe 8 to a pump 6. The outlet of the pump is connected via a pipe 9 to a strainer 4 in the vessel 13. In use the effluent is sucked into the container 12 where it rises, until it overflows back into the sewer, the immiscible liquid, of lighter density than the water, rises in the vessel and is discharged into the receiving vessel 16. A float may be located in the vessel 16 so that, at a certain level, an electrically-operated signal device is actuated.
