Pharmaceutical compositions containing acyl tryptamine derivatives, and new acyl tryptamine derivatives and processes for their manufacture

Pival - [2 - (3 - indolyl) ethyl] amide is prepared by reacting tryptamine or its hydrochloride with pivaloyl chloride. Pyrrole - 2 - carbox - [2 - (3 - indoyl) - ethyl] amide is prepared by activating tryptamine with phosphorus trichloride and then reacting with pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition comprises as active ingredient an acyl tryptamine of formula FORM:1055413/A5-A6/1 wherein R is alkyl or heterocyclic; preferred compounds being pival-[2-(3-indolyl) ethyl] amide, acet-[2-(3-indolyl) ethyl] p amide and pyrrole-2-carboxy-[2-(3-indolyl) ethyl] amide. The compositions may be administered orally, by injection or per rectum in known form in conjunction with conventional pharmaceutical agents. Other active ingredients which may be present are acetyl salicylic acid, codeine, salicylamide, p-acetamido-phenol, phenacetin, phenobarbitone, cartisone, prednisolone, phenylbutazone, chlorpromazine, chloroquine, quinine, caffeine and theobromine.
