In a circular knitting-machine having bearded needles the selection means for pressing the needles includes an electromagnet. The needles 2 are pressed by pressers P each of which is controlled by a spring strip 9. The strips are tensioned by cam 10 and when passing the de-energized magnet 6 slip through a gap in the cam and push the sinkers into the path of the pressing cam 11. If the magnet is energized, a strip passing the gap is retained in its tensioned condition and passes behind the pressing cam, so that the associated sinker clears the pressing cam. Selection of unpressed needles enables tuck stitches to be incorporated in the fabric. Energization of the magnet may be controlled by an electronically sensed pattern film.
