A dielectric loss measuring apparatus comprises a resonant circuit including an inductance L and a first adjustable tuning capacitance C1, across which is connected a further capacitor x in which the test specimen dielectric is inserted. An arrangement including the meter M and a diode D2 compares the peak voltage developed across the inductance with the supply voltage which is developed across the capacitor C4. A large fixed capacitor C2 is in series with the first adjustable capacitor, and the supply voltage is applied across this fixed capacitor through a second adjustable capacitor C3. The resonant circuit is first tuned by adjusting C1 without the specimen, the specimen is then included and the circuit is retuned. The change in adjustment of the second capacitor C3 to balance the voltage across the inductance with that across C4 is a measure of the dielectric loss of the specimen.
