Oil is displaced from oil-bearing rock by water flooding with a solution containing a mixture of X alkyl aryl sulphonates at least one of which is not X alkyl benzene sulphonate and X is a cation such as sodium, lithium potassium magnesium, rubidium, calcium, barium, strontium, copper, ammonium and amines having a solubility of at least 5000 parts per million of water. The aryl portion of the nucleus may be naphthalene, anthracene, indan, tetralin, indene dihydronaphthalene, acenaphthene, perinaphthane, dihydroanthracene, acenaphthalene and phenanthrene.
