An hydraulic jet-propulsion unit for a waterborne craft, comprises a tube (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), into whose leading section (5) water of flotation e.g. sea water, is drawn by a rotary or reciprocating pump which is driven by turbineblading (17) through a shaft (15), the turbineblading being propelled by a mixture of water and steam entering a nozzle portion (9) at the rear end of the tube. Steam is generated in the water, so as to produce a reactive thrust, by a hot fluid passing through an annular chamber (11) formed in the wall of the tube (1), said fluid flowing to and from a heat source e.g. a nuclear reactor, through pipes (12), (13) in a sponson (2) by which the unit is attached to the hull of the craft. The hot fluid may flow through said chamber either helically, Fig. 4 (not shown), or axially (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively, the chamber 11 may be formed so that the hot fluid circulates through it along two coaxial paths (Fig. 6, not shown). Salt deposits on the inner surface of the tube 1 are removed by a pair of scrapers (19), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), attached to the shaft (15).
