Improvements relating to manufacture of tri-butyl tin monochloride

Tributyltin monochloride is prepared by mixing equimolar proportions of tetrabutyl tin and stannic chloride without applying external heat and then subjecting the mixture to rapid heating so as to remove by flash distillation from the mixture, the monobutyl tin trichloride which is formed. The tributyltin monochloride may then be distilled separately under reduced pressure and hydrolysed with caustic soda to form the oxide. The by-product mono-butyl tin trichloride is recycled into the manufacture of tetrabutyl tin either by a Grignard technique or by the use of alkyl aluminium compounds.
