[Also in Division D1] In a method of controlling the tension in wire, tape or the like during the production of non-circular windings a spring-loaded lever 1 which pivots about a point A carries a roller 5 co-operating with a fixed roller 6 to take up slack in the wound material 7 whilst means 3, coupled to the drive means of the winding machine imparts a supplementary motion to the lever 1. As shown the means 3 is a cam which moves the lever 1 in synchronism with the drive of the winding machine to compensate for variations in the rate of consumption of material. The lever 1 is made in two parts urged into line by a spring 4, and can flex to take up minor variations in tension. Movement of the lever 1 may also control a shoe brake 10 acting on a fixed guide roller 11.
