A well assembly having a device for remote installation comprises telescopic tubular members 1, 10, opposed recesses 11, 19 in the members, a latch 26 in one recess biassed to engage the other recess, an inclined cam surface 34 on the latch, and a member 37 movable on one of the members tb co-operate with the cam surface to retract the latch into its recess. Figure 1 shows the casing hanger 10 held in the member 1 of an underwater wellhead by latches 26 retractable by the axially slidable sleeve 37, the hanger supporting a seal 44 and a tubing hanger 46 fixed to the member I by latches 52. The hanger 10 is lowered into the member 1 on a tool 70 (Fig. 6) having latches 73 supporting the hanger. The tool 70 is freed from the hanger by a wire-line tool 90 which raises a member 83 on the tool 70 to retract the latches 73. When it is desired to remove the hanger 10 the tool 70 is lowered into the hanger with a plug 117 and fluid is supplied by ducts 122, 108 to move a piston 99 on the tool to move the sleeve 37 to retract the latches 26 to free the hanger 10. The plug is removed by a wire line tool 129, the latches 73 are retracted by the tool 90, and the tool 70 is removed. The tool 70 is also used for operations on the tubing hanger. In Fig. 9 a packer 141 has its seal 144 engaged with the casing 15 by compressing the packer in the member 1 by means of a tool 140, the packer being held in the compressed condition by latches 148 engaging the recess 11. To remove the packer from the well, latches 168 on the tool are freed and engaged with an internal shoulder 181 on the packer, and the latches 148 are retracted by actuating a piston 158 on the tool. In modifications (Figs. 11, 12 not shown) flanged heads are sleeved on or in tubular well members, the latch release sleeves being actuated hydraulically.
