The spine or last pages of the book are clamped at 32 and the pages to be read are bent back over a sloping surface 31 where they are held by a spring- loaded finger 34 which carries a leaf spring resting on the top page and a portion 38 which holds the other pages. When a motor 5 is energized under the control of the operator or of a time switch, the finger is withdrawn laterally to release the first page which then falls by gravity to rest on a transparent plate 7 through which it is read by the disabled person (who may be lying on his back). Energization of another motor 11 moves the transparent sheet sideways so that the page hangs vertically and then to the right so that the sheet engages behind the page and pushes it to join the pages already read with its other face downwards. A single motor with clutches may operate the device.
