A circuit arrangement for igniting a pair of controlled rectifiers connected in reverse parallel such as ignitrons 1, 2 comprises connecting the anodes of the ignitrons to one terminal of a bridge circuit 8 by way of two diodes 19, 20 and connecting the two igniter electrodes to the other terminal of the bridge circuit by way of two further diodes 5, 6, the two bridge terminals being interconnected of one or more thyristors 9, 10, the firing point of the thyristor 10 being controlled by a circuit which includes a transistor 16 and a transformer 18 to which transformer are applied pulses from a two state device. Control of the firing instant of thyristor 10 is thus effective to control the conducting periods of the ignitrons 1, 2, extinction of which is assisted by arranging that the diodes 19, 20 are constructed to introduce an appreciable voltage drop into the circuit. The diodes 19, 20 may comprise multi-cell selenium diodes or zener diodes and the ignition of thyristor 9 dependent upon that of thyristor 10.
