A device for sealing the detachable closure 4 of a pressure vessel 1, or a pipeline or a joint for a pipeline, comprises an annular gap 18 bounded by sealing surfaces 8, 10 against which are sealed annular faces e.g. ribs 16, 17 on a continuous, metal sealing ring 15 supported by an annular metal tube 14 which, before the closure or joint has been fully sealed, has been deformed into a flattened section. The interior of the tube is pressurized by a fluid to press the ribs against the surfaces 8, 10. The cover may be rotatable and connected to the vessel by a bayonet joint.
