A toothed rack 2 of a steel containing is welded to a mild steel member 1, e.g. a leg of a sea-going drilling platform, by heating the rack 2 to 400‹ C., covering the surfaces of the rack to be welded with a layer of overlapping beads 6 deposited from electrodes having a lime-fluoride type flux, hardening and tempering the rack 2 whilst maintaining said temperature, and joining the rack 2 to the member 1 by layers 7 deposited by " back-step " welding, each layer 7 being stretched by hammering and the temperature of the rack being maintained at at least 50‹ C. In " back-step " welding each weld is divided into a series of lengths and each successive length is welded in the reverse direction.
