A fluorine compound in solid form which is capable of binding or losing fluorine in a reversible manner is present in an electric lamp having a filament of metal, non-metal or a compound of metal and non-metal and a filling of gas comprising or containing fluorine or a volatile fluoride. The fluorine compound may be introduced as a rod of, e.g. compressed cobaltous fluoride powder and evaporating the fluoride by heat. Alternatively the envelope of the lamp may be coated with the fluorine compound by vapour deposition, rinsing or spraying, the material being then burnt in. The fluorides of silver or cobalt are suitable. The ends of the filament may be protected by tubes of fluorine resistant material, e.g. copper, nickel, aluminium, magnesium or refractory fluorides such as calcium or magnesium fluoride, which may also be used to make the current supply members or the supports.
