Gasoline and petroleum lubricating oils are stabilized against oxidative degradation by compounds of the formula FORM:1031486/C4-C5/1 wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, or cycloalkyl or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, R1 is cycloalkyl or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, and A is oxygen, sulphur, carbonyl, or a cycloalkylidene radical or a C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof.ALSO:Compounds of the formula FORM:1031486/C2/1 wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl, or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, R1 is cycloalkyl or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof and A is oxygen, sulphur, carbonyl or a cycloalkylidene radical or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, are made by contacting in the presence of a catalyst, which is an acidic condensation catalyst when A is a cycloalkylidene radical, and an acidic alkylation catalyst when A is O, S or CO, (1) a diphenol of the formula FORM:1031486/C2/2 wherein X is O, S or CO, with a cycloalkene, or (2) a phenol having the formula FORM:1031486/C2/3 with a cycloalkanone or C1 to C4 alkyl derivativ thereof, and separating the product from the reaction mixture. The invention also comprises products in which R is as above, R1 is cycloalkyl having only 1 ring or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, and A is CO or cycloalkylidene or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof.ALSO:Polyolefins, such as polypropylene, are stabilized with a compound of the formula FORM:1031486/C3/1 wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, or cycloalkyl or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, R1 is cycloalkyl or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof, and A is oxygen, sulphur, carbonyl, or a cycloalkylidene radical or C1 to C4 alkyl derivative thereof. Alkyl esters of thiodialkanoic acids containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms in each of the alkoxy portions of the molecule, may be included as auxiliary anti-oxidants.
