Adhesive for bonding alpha-olefin copolymers or natural rubber comprising a dispersion of an interpolymer of ethylene and 1, 4 hexadiene, carbon black and a sulfur curing system
Adhesive for bonding alpha-olefin copolymers or natural rubber comprising a dispersion of an interpolymer of ethylene and 1, 4 hexadiene, carbon black and a sulfur curing system
An adhesive composition suitable for bonding normally solid, chain saturated a olefin hydrocarbon copolymers, comprises a dispersion in a volatile inert organic liquid of an interpolymer of ethylene and a non-conjugated diene of 6 to 22 carbon atoms, said interpolymer containing at least 20% side-chain substituent bromine by weight and a sulphur or peroxide curing system. The a -olefine copolymers comprise at least two a -monoolefins and at least one a -monoolefin and at least one non-conjugated hydrocarbon diene. The adhesive composition is applied as a dispersion of concentration 10-20% by wt. in a volatile inert organic liquid. The bromine containing interpolymer generally consist of monomer units of (1) ethylene; (2) at least one brominated olefin which is either (a) a compound having the structure CH2=CH-CH2-R1, where R1 is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical substituted by at least one bromine atom, or (b) a 2-norbornene substituted by at least one bromine atom and having one unsubstituted carbon-carbon double bond; (3) a non-conjugated hydrocarbon diene and optionally (4) at least one unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer. Long lists of representative bromine-containing copolymers are applied. An alternative method involves preparing a highly unsaturated copolymer of ethylene and a non-conjugated diene and subsequently halogenating the copolymer. Sulphur curing systems for use in the adhesive composition comprise sulphur, a metal oxide and a curing accelerator, alternatively a peroxide curing system, e.g. the alkyl, alkylaryl or acyl peroxides and peresters may be used. The adhesive is applied in the conventional manner and then cured. Specification 972,543 is referred to.
