Hydrocarbon reforming catalysts are made by calcining synthetcially prepared hydrous refractory inorganic oxide and then compositing with a platinum-group metallic component and chlorine in amounts so as to impart to the final catalyst between 0,75 and 1,75% by weight, calculated as elementary chlorine, of combined chloride and between 0,01 and 2% by weight of platinum-group metal, and oxidizing the fluoride-free composite containing chlorine as the sole halogen component at a temperature of 204-316 DEG C. for a period of at least one hour and until the volatile matter content thereof is decreased to a level below 5,0% by weight, the oxidizing temperature thereafter being increased to a level of 371-538 DEG C. and oxidizing the composite at the increased temperature for at least one hour and until the volatile matter content of the final catalyst is decreased to a level below 2,0% by weight. By platinum-group metal is meant Pt, Pd, Ir, Os, Rh and Ru. Examples are given of refractory oxides and include Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, MgO, B2O3, ThO2, TiO2, SrO2 and mixtures thereof.
