1,183,404. Sulphur vulcanizable copolymers. COPOLYMER RUBBER & CHEMICAL CORP. 25 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966; 3 Aug., 1966], No. 24279/67. Heading C3P. . A sulphur vulcanizable elastomer is made by interpolymerizing e.g. continuously, a monomeric mixture containing ethylene, at least one alpha-mono-olefin having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. propene, and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a plurality of carbon-to-carbon double bonds in solution, in an organic solvent, in the presence of a Ziegler polymerization catalyst containing a transition metal, and deactivating the catalyst by admixing water with the organic solvent solution of the elastomer in an amount in excess of the quantity required to deactivate the catalyst and by substantially instantaneous admixture with the solution with vigorous agitation, e.g. a Reynolds' number of at least 2000, less than 10 minutes after polymerization has been completed whereby molecular jump is suppressed, and recovering the elastomer. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer may be 1,4-hexadiene, dicyclopentadiene, bicyclo (2,2,1) octa- or hepta - 2,5 - diene, or 5 - alkenyl - 2 - or 5 - SP"/SP alkenyl-2-norbornenes such as 5-methylene, 5 - ethylidene -, or 5 - isopropylidene - 2 - norbornenes. The exemplified Ziegler catalyst is ethylaluminium sesquichloride and vanadium oxytrichloride. The terpolymers may be sulphur vulcanized.
