A veterinary composition useful for the minimisation or avoidance of hurt or damage in ruminants and pigs subjected to conditions of stress comprises a compound FORM:1005739/A5-A6/1 wherein X is a nitro group or a halogen atom, R is an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms and Y is a trifluoromethyl group or a halogen atom and the broken lines denote bonds to optional substituents, in admixture with a solid or liquid carrier (other than water). Specified compounds are 7-chloro-5-phenyl-1-methyl-2, 3 dihydro-1H-1, 4-benzodiazepinone-(2), 7-nitro-5-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-2, 3 dihydro-1H-1, 4-bezodiazepinone-(2), 7-nitro-5-(2-chloro-phenyl)-2, 3 dihydro-1H-1, 4-benzodiazepinone-(2). The compositions, of the compounds as such, may be administered orally or parenterally. The carrier may be an animal feedstuff or drinking water. The invention also comprises the method of administering to said animals the above active compound or composition.
