1,092,188. Washing machines. FRAME SOC. ANON. April 20, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No. 17325/66. Heading D1A. A washing machine comprises a drum which is rotatable about a non-vertical axis and is rigid with two liquid-tight chambers partly filled with liquid, each chamber both containing at least two eccentric masses freely journalled on the driving shaft of the drum and also comprising a locking device which, below a predetermined speed, determines the position of the masses such that the centre of gravity of the combined masses is located on the axis of rotation of the drum, and which above the predetermined speed releases the masses under the influence of centrifugal force, whereby the masses take up positions for compensating the unbalance of the drum. As shown, the drum 1 is driven by a horizontal shaft 2, and at each end is rigid with a circular chamber 13 partly filled with oil and containing two semi-circular bodies 16 journalled side by side on shaft 2. A band 24, slidably and elastically engaging the inner periphery of chamber 13, carries four leaf springs 21 each of which is rigid with a block 20. The arrangement is such that two blocks 20 normally engage the respective ends of the diametrical side 23 of a body 16, the sides 23 being co-planar, whereby the bodies 16 constitute a disc, the centre of gravity of which is on the axis of shaft 2. Above a predetermined speed, centrifugal force carries the blocks 20 out of engagement to release the bodies 16. When the bodies 16 re-engage the blocks 20 band 24 moves relatively to chamber 13 to absorb shock. In a modification Fig. 5, not shown, a member (27), pivoted intermediately on a body 16, has one end (33) biased by a spring (32), mounted in body 16, into engagement with a recess in a block (34) carried by band 24. The other and weighted end (29) of member (27) moves outwardly under centrifugal force to release end (33) from block (34) above a predetermined speed. It is stated that the bodies 16 may be secured together by a first locking means, and the bodies as a unit are secured to the chamber by a second locking means, both locking means being released substantially simultaneously at a predetermined speed, and that the second locking means may be omitted. Shaft 2 is journalled in bearings 3 connected by flexible watertight members 5 to a stationary tub 4. The bearings 3 are connected to a stationary frame 6 by coil springs 7 and shock absorbers 8.
