Electrically fired blasting initiator comprising a casing 40 containing a charge 44 such as P.E.T.N. which will not explode by unintentional heating of an " exploding " bridge wire 50 extending across a plug 40, the charge being shaped by the casing and plug geometry so as to produce a linearly propagated shock wave. The bridgewire is made of copper and has a gap adjacent one of the electrodes 48 to provide circuit discontinuity. The casing and plug may be made of vinyl plastics material, and the casing may be cylindrical with an inwardly directed conical end, or rectangular with a 60 degree V-shaped end 42. The plug may also have a 30 degree V-shaped end.
