Production of fibers or threads by melt spinning of mixtures of polypropylene and polymers amides

The dye affinity and stability of fibres based on polypropylene is improved by blending polypropylene with a modifier which is a polymer of an acrylamide of formula: FORM:0968692/C3/1 wherein R is H or alkyl, and R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, provided that R1 and R2 are not both H. The acrylamide may be a homopolymer, or a copolymer with another said acrylamide or with a different ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Lists of suitable acrylamides and monomers for preparing modifiers are given and of these the polymers preferred are those derived from N,N-dimethyl acrylamide, N - isopropylmethacrylamide, N - propylacrylamide, N-benzylacrylamide, N-octadecylacrylamide, N-cyclohexylacrylamide, N-methylmethacrylamide, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and vinylidine chloride. The blended compositions may be formed into fibres, yarn, knit tubes, socks and may be woven into blankets or used in the production of car seat covers and marine hawsers. Spinning and dyeing are effected by conventional procedures using dispersed, prematallized, direct or acid wool dyes.
