In a prestressed concrete nuclear reactor pressure vessel the cylindrical body 1 is flexibly sealed to the end 2 by sheet metal annuli 12, 14. The edges of the annuli walls are welded to the rings 18 and 20 which are themselves welded to the internal sealing layers 3, 4. The pressure between 12 and 14, in space 13, is maintained at half that inside the reactor. Plastic packing 28 is mounted in the gap 26. A third metal annulus may be provided outside annulus 12 and a negative pressure maintained between it and 12. The annuli are protected against radiation from the reactor core by the concrete walls of the grooves 6 and 8. Specification 1,012,262 is referred to.
