1,148,669. Deflecting propulsive gases. ENTWICKLUNGSRING SUD G.m.b.H. 24 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct., 1965; 16 Nov., 1966], No. 47723/66. Heading B7G. A jet pipe for an aircraft propulsion unit 30 comprises a series of rotatable tubular sections 212, 213, 214, Fig. 10, interconnected along oblique planes with means mounted on a section for rotating the succeeding section due to the relative motion of this preceding section. The sections 212, 213, 214 are rotated at the same speed but in alternating directions, as shown by the arrows on Fig. 10, thereby deflecting the thrust of the jet pipe efflux, so that the thrust line remains within the vertical plane of the jet pipe entry 11. The means for rotating the neighbouring sections may comprise two intermeshing gearwheels 604, 605 rotating about shafts mounted on one section 213 each engaging a rack 124 or 125 on the neighbouring section 212 or 214 whereby the relative motion of the section 212 is passed to the section 214. A modified form of this means, Fig. 15, is required to rotate section 213, because the jet pipe entry 11 is stationary and has only half the speed relative to section 212 required for section 213. The section 212 may be driven by a motor (70) and chain (71) drive, Fig. 9 (not shown). An alternative to the intermeshing gears 604, 605 may comprise a carriage 60, Fig. 5, mounted on circumferential rails round section 13 having parallel passages into which slide rods 61, 62 pivoted to brackets 121, 141 on sections 12, (14), Fig. 4 (not shown). Relative movement of section 12 will cause the carriage to move round section 13 thereby moving section (14) in step with section 12. The jet pipe may comprise more than three sections 212, 213, 214, each section excluding the last having means for rotating the succeeding section(s).
