[Also in Group I] Samples are withdrawn intermittently from a plate 86, Fig. 1, which is intermittently rotated and has a circular array of cups 88 into which a pivoted tube 90 dips in turn when the plate is stationary. Withdrawal is effected by a pump 50 of the resilient tube and pressure-roller kind, which also takes up a processing liquid through a tube 62 and air through a tube 60. The resulting separate segments of liquid and air flowing along a common conduit 68 are mixed in a coil 66 and are fed at 18 to a web of filter material, e.g. paper, 12, Fig. 2, drawn continuously over a perforate suction block 24 by rollers 16. The block 24 is seen from opposite sides in Figs. 1 and 2 (see Group I). Filtrate is withdrawn by the same pump 50 and is mixed with colour reagent and air (previously drawn in at 74 and 72 respectively) at 78, before passing to a recording colorimeter 52.
