A synchronous generator 5 supplying A.C. traction motors 6 is driven by gas turbine 4 forming part of a set which comprises compressor 2 which is driven at a selected speed by turbine 3. A field winding 7 of the generator is supplied through rectifier 8 from magnetic amplifier 9, having control windings 14, 15, opposed by control winding 16. The winding 14 is energized in accordance with either the field current or the stator current of the generator, the winding 15 being supplied from tachometer generator 20 driven by the turbine 4. The winding 16 may be supplied through a tuned circuit, from an A.C. tachometer generator driven by the turbine 3 or from a D.C. tachometer generator through a diode and a potentiometer which is connected to a source of constant voltage. Alternatively, the control winding 16 is energized in accordance with the output of a transducer for converting mechanical movement of a fuel supply mechanism into an electrical signal. In another arrangement, the winding 7 is supplied from an exciter whose field winding is connected to the output of rectifier 8. The latter may comprise a diode bridge or thyristors. Over a certain range of frequencies, the traction current is kept at a steady value by a supplementary winding 26 on the magnetic amplifier 9 which is energized when the voltage from tachometer generator 20 exceeds a bias voltage developed across potentiometer 27. The control winding 15 may be connected in series with a choke coil or capacitor. The magnetic amplifier 9 can be provided with stabilizing windings receiving signals from the field winding 7 through a capacitor or transformer.
