[Also in Divisions B1 and C5] A re-usable lubricant-coolant oil in water emulsion for use in the shaping of a metal by a process wherein the workpiece and the tool used are contacted with a flowing stream of emulsion, comprising 0À5-20% by wt. of a neat soluble oil, up to 400 p.p.m. of unohelated hardness expressed as CaCO 3 , the remaining hardness being chelated with the polyvalent metal hardness ions, and the balance essentially water said emulsion having a pH of 5 to 11, the oil phase being in the form of globules of diameter less than 50 Á and average diameter 1- 25 Á, the emulsion being readily filterable through a mechanical filter, and being substantially free of solid particles larger than a predetermined size in the range 0À5-20 Á and of continuous free oil phase. A concentrate of neat soluble oil may comprise 70-90% by wt. of a light mineral oil 1-20% of one or more anionic or non-ionic oil-in-water emulsifying agents up to 0À5% of a bactericide and 0À5-5% of a coupling agent. Suitable anionic emulsifying agents are alkanolamino soaps of long chain fatty acids. The lubricant emulsion may be used in the rolling of magnesium, aluminium. copper and ferrous metal and may be re-used after adjustment of the unchelated hardness and pH by addition of the chelating agents. Examples of rolling schedules are given.
