A variable inductor or transformer comprises first and second magnetic cores 10, 11, each carrying at least one winding, the cores being located on opposite sides of a plane II-II and each comprising a pair of legs terminating at said plane and circumscribable at said plane by a rectangle (13) (Fig. 2, not shown), having sides not differing in length by more than 15%, means mounting the cores for relative displacement about an axis 12, the range of such displacement including an angular position at which each leg of one core is in alignment with a respective leg of the other core, and the cores being so shaped and dimensioned that each closes the magnetic circuit of the other at angular positions within said range. The winding(s) of each core are connected in series aiding relationship such that (as shown) the net field is zero and current passing through the device experiences substantially no reactance. However, on rotation of core 10 through 180 degrees the reactance becomes a maximum, and for angular displacements between 0 and 180 degrees and 180 and 360 degrees the reactance is between zero and maximum, being proportional to the displacement, by virtue of a substantially linear characteristic. A voltage regulator (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) comprises all four windings connected in series, and a tapping (35) at the connection between the windings of one core and the windings of the other core. The cores may, in a modification, each have three legs, the centre one of which may carry a winding. The windings, in another modification, may be inductively coupled in which case the device constitutes a transformer. In yet another modification, a characteristic other than a straight line may be obtained by an asymmetrical winding arrangement.
