In a time division multiplex system including an exchange system and a plurality of associated subscriber stations each provided with a digital data transmitter and receiver, the subscriber stations being connected to the exchange via respective lines which are connected within the exchange to a common multiplex rail via respective pulse-operated switches, the pulses which operate the switches also serve as control pulses to control the transmission or reception of data by the associated digital data transmitter or receiver. As shown in Fig. 2, a subscriber Tn1 can be connected via line T11 and switch ZS1 to a multiplex rail MS, the switch being controlled via a delay T by pulses from decoder Da which is associated with a store Ua containing the addresses of the subscribers. These pulses are also supplied directly via line T11 to control the data transmitter and receiver DG1, the delay T corresponding to the duration of a control pulse. In a modification the delay T is included in the control pulse feed to line T11 and the control pulses are fed directly to gate ZS1. In an alternative arrangement a separate control line feeds the pulses to the data transmitter and receiver.
