[Also in Divisions C7 and D1] A fibre reinforced metal matrix e.g. of cylindrical, spherical, conical or flattened strip form, is made by winding one or more continuous filaments e.g. of carbon, boron or silica, on to a former and simultaneously coating the fibre by electrodeposition with a metal e.g. Ni, Cr, Ni-Cr, Cu, Pb or Ag. As shown, a non- conductive filament 15 from a reel 16, which is first coated with a conductive material e.g. Hg, then cleaned e.g. with NaOH solution in vessels 17-18 and washed by a water spray 19, is received via a pulley 20 on a further pulley 21 on a carrier 22 which reciprocates on rails (23, 24, 27) within a bridge member 12 suspended over a plating tank 11 between guide frames 13, so as to be wound on a mandrel or former 34 rotating in bearings 35-36 in the member 12 and immersed in the electrolyte bath. The carrier 22 is driven by a worm shaft 30 connected to a motor 29, and the former 34 by a motor 38 via gears 37, 39-41. For winding a closed shape, Fig. 5 (not shown), an inflatable former or one of lower melting point than that of the finished article may be used and subsequently removed.
