A vertical mill 10, Fig. 1, comprises a housing 11 vertically movable on a base 12 by screwjacks 13, and work rolls 18, 20 rotatably supported in the housing by top chocks 28, 29 and bottom chocks 30, 31. The rolls are connected by wobblers to drive spindles 24, 26, by means of couplings rotatably carried in third chocks 34, 90. Chocks 28-31 are slidably adjustable on rails 32, 36, Fig. 3, and are secured in the adjusted position by roll parting hydraulic pistons. The chocks are also engaged by positioning screws 48, Fig. 3, the screws being actuated by motors 54 and spindles 52, and stops 55 are provided to limit the amount of roll separation. A third chock 34, Figs. 4 and 5, is slidably mounted on rails 32 which terminate in a stop portion 56, and the chock is clamped to the rails by screw actuated wedges 78 which engage faces 68 on the chock and faces 70 on the stop portion. A horizontal mill 94, Fig. 9, has bearing chocks 34a, 90a and third chocks 34a 90a all of which are slidably adjustable on rails 32a, 36a.
