Cutter picks P1-P9 are so arranged around the curved periphery of a cutter drum as to lie on one or more helices, such as that defined by P1,- P3, P5, P7, said helix or helices being of reverse hand to the helically arranged mineral-loading surfaces, such as that defined by P1, P4, P7, of the drum with the picks, which are - preferably fewer than fifteen in number, of the helix or helices being so arranged that successive picks of the or each helix are axially close enough for the cutting action of the leading pick to assist the cutting action of the successive pick, whilst adjacent picks of the same guide means are too far axially apart for such picks to have any effect on each other.
