A method of building a marine structure e.g. a mooring dolphin, lighthouse, quay or pier comprises building a floatable assembly which includes a floatable base element 2, a columnar element 3 mounted on the base, and a floatable superstructure element 4; floating the assembled elements to the site, sinking the base 2 onto the marine bed while supporting it from the superstructure 4 (see Fig. 17), raising the superstructure 4 while supporting it from the columnar element 3 (see Fig. 18) and securing the raised superstructure to the columnar element. As shown, the columnar element is pivoted on base 2 which has an extension 11. The pivotal connection enables the columnar element to be secured in the vertical position by ties 9. The base 2 may be compartmentalised (Figs. 2 and 3 not shown) and the compartments flooded when the base is submerged. More than one columnar element may be used (Figs. 7 and 8 not shown). The base 2 and the superstructure 4 and the superstructure 4 and the columnar element 3 are respectively secured together by either a jacking device or a winch and tackle to control their respective relative movements.
