Heading E1F A portable rotary drilling rig has a drilling assembly 6 mounted on guides 4 and supported by a cable 12 connected to a winch 10. The assembly is pulled down for feeding the drill by a cable 13 passing around a pulley system 18, 19 and connected to the winch, the pulley 18 being carried by a rod 21 engaged by a spring 25. The winch is operated to apply a predetermined load to the rod compressing the spring to store energy for the feed force which may be measured on a scale 26. A tensioner 34, 35 takes up slack in the cable 12. The winch has a ratchet gear which permits pulling, running and freeing of drills. The assembly is driven by a hydraulic or I.C. engine 7 and means are provided for the supply of flushing fluid. The slope of the guides may be adjusted by moving a connector 9 to alter the length of the rear stay 5.
