1,115,724. Track brakes. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. 17 Aug., 1966 [23 Aug., 1965], No. 36080/65. Heading F2E. In a track brake device of the kind in which telescopic piston and cylinder devices 15, 11 are mounted adjacent a rail to retard a railway vehicle by the action of each device against the periphery of a vehicle wheel, the piston member 15 is provided with a head 16 which is engageable by the flange of the vehicle wheel and which is laterally extended towards the rail head 19, whereby it passes close to the rail head during contraction and extension of the device, the position of the cylinder member 11 and the piston member 15 with respect to the rail being such that the line of rolling contact of the wheel flange with the head of the piston member is substantially offset from the longitudinal central axis of the device towards the head of the rail, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the shock load due to the impact of the wheel flange on the head of the piston member is reduced by elastic deformation of the device. As shown in Fig. 2, the line of rolling contact passes through, or near to, a position shown by the arrow A which lies wholly to one side in the cylinder member 11 and the piston 15. The point 26 (Fig. 1) at which the wheel flange first engages the head 16 is spaced from the central axis of the device both in a direction transverse to the rail and in the longitudinal direction of the rail. Both the spacings produce an increased moment arm about the initial impact force F on the wheel flange to apply a bending moment to the piston member 15. The impact shock of the wheel flange on the head 16 is partially absorbed by elastic deformation of the telescopic device. The construction of the mounting bracket 12 with its bolt fastenings 14 may possess inherent resilience which contributes to the reduction of the inpact shock. The bracket 12 carries a pair of stops 24 which are engageable by lugs 25 on respective ears 22, 22SP1/SP to permit a limit to the extension of the telescopic device. The ear 22 may be formed as a leaf spring or a pile of two or more leaf springs rigidly secured to the head 16. The bracket member 12 is provided with an adjustable mounting to the central web 27 of the rail 13 and this takes the form of a bolt 14 having a shank portion 34 which is eccentric with respect to the shank portion 31 and fits into a bore 35 in the rail web 27.
