An electrical device for use in slaughtering livestock comprises a conveyer track 3 by means of which livestock, particularly poultry, are brought into contact with two electrodes at least one of the electrodes comprising a jet or curtain of conductive liquid. As described a first electrode 7 comprises a bridge contact 8 positioned to contact the legs of the animal the head of the animal being simultaneously hit by jets of conductive liquid 12 12SP1/SP issuing from nozzles 5, 5SP1/SP. The liquid is pumped to the nozzles by pump 9 and is returned to the pump via collecting funnels 6, 6SP1/SP. In a modification the liquid comprises water from a mains supply to which salts or acids may be added and a liquid-receiving gully is provided at the bottom of the housing 4. Instead of jets, a curtain of liquid may be supplied.
