The invention comprises (1) d- and l-ephedrine D-arabonates; (2) a method of resolving ephedrine which comprises forming a solution of a mixture of d- and l-ephedrine D-arabonates in a solvent in which the d-ephedrine salt is less soluble than the l-ephedrine salt and fractionally crystallizing the former from the solution; (c) a process for preparing d- or l-ephedrine or a salt of either by reacting the corresponding D-arabonate with an alkali or acid. Several methods of preparing the solution in (2) are described, preferred solvents being water and/or at least one C1- 8 aliphatic alcohol.
