Composition and method for the prophylactic treatment of parturient paresis

A veterinary preparation in dosage unit form for the prophylactic treatment of parturient paresis comprises from 25 to 250 gms. per dosage of CaCl 2 together with a physiologically acceptable form of ethoxyethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose or agar-agar and has a viscosity of from 100 to 10,000 centipoises at 25‹C. Ruminatoric substances, e.g. veratrum alkaloids, vitamins and trace elements such as Zn, Co, Mn and Sb may also be present. The invention includes the treatment of non-human animals by orally administering an aqueous solution of CaCl 2 and the abovementioned thickeners having a viscosity in the stated range.
