The blade may be corrugated, with the size of the undulations corresponding to the mean surface curvature of the ballast, the shank being between two convexities and on the opposite side of the blade to the direction of thrust. The blade, and shank, may be tapered towards the bottom. When used with a machine having two blades working between and packing two sleepers, the blades are staggered such that a convex part of one is opposite a concave part of the other.
