1,131,980. Windings for dynamo-electricmachines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Dec., 1966 [28 March, 1966], No. 57909/66. Heading H2A. In polyphase stator windings having concentric pole groups there is a tendency for the end-turns of the outermost coils in adjacent pole groups to touch and to subject the insulation at this point to the full line voltage. This danger is overcome by spacing these adjacent end-turns radially of the core and interposing end-turns of other phases. This is achieved by placing one pole-group 1A of one phase at the bottom of the slots and the other pole-group 6A of that phase at the top of the slots. In addition, the remaining pole-groups 2B, 4B and 3C, 5C extend obliquely from one depth to another so that they lie between the end-turns of the first group. This arrangement is arrived at by first inserting coils 1A in the slot-bottoms, then coils 2B partly overlapping 1A, then coils 3C, 4B, 5C and finally 6A at the slot-tops. The turns may be sinusoidally distributed, i.e. the outer concentric coils may have more turns, and may completely fill a slot. The insulation between coils is augmented by sheet insulating elements 71, 72, 73. These elements (Fig. 3, not shown) consist of legs which extend through the slots between coils, and end portions which lie between end-turns. The coils may be preformed or wound in situ. Overload protection is provided by a temperature-sensitive element 77 having a heat-absorbing fin 78 engaging the windings.
