1,175,656. Waste heat steam generators; tubular heat exchange elements; converter chimneys. WAAGNER-BIRO A.G. 3 May, 1968 [4 May, 1967], No. 21208/68. Headings F4A, F4J and F4S. The welded water-tube walls of a square or rectangular cooling stack 10 for the waste gases of a metallurgical furnace or converter 16 have a fluid circulated therethrough by means of a pump 18 and by controlling the flow of cooling air past the surface of the water tube walls opposite that defining the waste gas passage 40, 42, the liquid-vapour ratio of the fluid flowing in the walls may be controlled. The tubes 50 contain spirally twisted sheet-metal strips 58 which cause circulation in the tubes. V-Shaped channels 64 are welded along the tubes 50 and with a wall structure 66 define channels 80, 82, 84 for the cooling air. The air is supplied by centrifugal blowers 92, 93, 97 and the flow is controlled by dampers 98 in the blower outlets or by varying the speed of electric blower driving motors. The cooling passages may be defined by plates (112), Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), welded longitudinally to the tubes and successive portions (116) of each plate, between slots (114) extending from the outer edge of the plate, are bent at different angles to the plane of the tube wall. A pair of cooling stacks, Fig. 2 (not shown), may discharge to a common waste gas outlet pipe (110).
