A thermal regenerator comprises at least one set of tubes 5 arranged within its heat storage mass 4, each tube being of elongated crosssection. A preferably pressure-tight heat insulating layer 2 is contained between an outer casing 1 and a container 3 for the heat storage mass. In one form (Fig. 2), each tube is twisted about its longitudinal axis, and each tube may be coiled so that the longitudinal axis follows a helical path.
