A device for transverse welding in a web of plastics film has a feed roller 4 which supplies the web in a double layer to a guiding roller 8 on a tilting arm 31. The web is then passed to the driving means which consists of an idle roller 10 and a continuously, clockwise turning driving wheel 28 in contact with 10 which advances the web in stages through a welding unit 12. The discontinuous movement of the web is achieved by the arm 31 tilting so that the roller 10 moves down and the other end of 31 moves up to rest against the stop 43 when the brake shoe 42 presses on the web passing over 8. The welding is then carried out while the web is stationary and clamped between the holder 50 and perforating member 48. The web is also in a slackened condition during treatment due to a further slight downward movement of the roller 10. The web may be cooled by means of the cool air nozzles 51 and 52.
