The control rod is driven up out of the core of the reactor by the action of a liquid under pressure, and is allowed to return, when required, either solely under gravity or by the action of a liquid under pressure. A control valve, consisting of a conical stopper with a matching seating, is incorporated, and when the liquid is applied under pressure, this closes the valve, to prevent liquid escaping, and the pressure of the liquid when the rod drops opens the valve to permit the liquid to escape.
