The invention comprises triphenyl-tin-[pyridyl-N-oxide-2]-sulphide, having the probable structural formula FORM:1018805/C2/1 It is prepared by reacting 2-mercapto-pyridine-N-oxide with a compound of formula (C6H5)3-SnX, wherein X represents a hydroxyl group or the anion of an inorganic or organic acid, preferably in substantially equimolecular proportions. An organic solvent may be present, suitably, in the case where triphenyl-tin hydroxide is used, one by means of which water may be removed by azeotropic distillation. The product may be recrystallized from ethanol. Antimicrobial compositions may be prepared therefrom (see Division A5).ALSO:An antimicrobial composition comprises triphenyltin-[pyridyl-N-oxide-(2)]-sulphide (see Division C2) and an inert carrier. The composition may be in the form of an emulsion, e.g. containing xylene, butanone-2 and nonylphenol polyglycol ether, or a wettable powder, e.g. containing sodium sulphate, kaolin, sodium lignin sulphonate and sodium tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate, or a dust, e.g. containing kieselguhr, clay and talc. Pharmaceutical compositions e.g. in the form of an ointment, powder, cream or lint, are suitable for treating skin fungi e.g. epidermophyton.
