In a process for making a can-like container, an end portion of film having synthetic plastics on its inner surface is applied to a can body having synthetic plastics on its inner surface and forced therein, so that the margin of the can body is splayed out and the periphery of the end turned back whereby the said plastics surfaces meet over an area suitable for welding and are then welded together. A can body 1 of aluminium foil lined with synthetic plastics is placed on a piston 2 and surrounded by a jacket 3 and 4 and a film 6a of the laminated material is placed on top of the can. A cutting cylinder 7 is moved down and blanks out a can lid 6. A piston 5, heated by means 8, moves down and presses the edges of lid and can body together to form a weld. The can with lid is then pushed through the jacket by an ejector piston 9 so that the welded part straightens out and is cooled by means of a cooling space 10 in the jacket. The lower end portion may be welded on in the same way or formed integrally with the can body by the deep-draw method from film web. The can body may be made from a sheet of laminated aluminium foil lined with plastics by welding the plastics inner edges of the sheet together and pressing in the weld 11.
