The invention comprises compounds of the formulae: FORM:1033776/C2/1 FORM:1033776/C2/2 wherein R1 is hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl or phenyl-C1- 6 alkyl, R is amino, C2- 6 alkanoyl-amino, C2- 6 alkanoyl-(C1- 6 alkyl)-amino or bis-(C2- 6 alkanoyl)-amino and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 8. These compounds are prepared by (a) iodination of a compound of the formula: FORM:1033776/C2/3 or a compound of the formula: - FORM:1033776/C2/4 and, if desired, acylating the resulting compound, or (b) reacting a compound of the formula: FORM:1033776/C2/5 (wherein R is acylamino) with a compound of the formula X-CO-CnH2n-CO-X, wherein X is chlorine or bromine, or phosgene. The compounds of Formulae I and II wherein R1 is hydrogen may be converted into their water-soluble salts, e.g. their sodium, calcium, morpholine and N-methyl glucamine salts.
