A transfer tail consists of not less than five coils clear of the package and is secured by an adhesive tab contacting at most three of the coils. Apparatus for punching tabs out of a length of adhesive tape, and suitably breaking each tab relatively on the tail, comprises supply and take-up reels of tape between which a length of tape extends across a nose 41, Fig. 1, (not shown), between the nose and a breaking jig 19 which fits on top of the spindle whorl and around the base of the bobbin. The apparatus a rod 3 urged by a spring 23 between a fixed part and a stop 24 on the rod. A member 35 fixed to the rod is attached by a magnet 43 connected to a handle 7. When this is raised, the magnet, is pulled, taking with it the member 35 and the rod to compress the spring. When the attraction between the magnet and the part 35 is overcome by the force of the spring, the rod is released to punch a piece out of the tape and a pawl carried by the magnet rotates the take-up rod through one step.
