A perforated tape reader guide consists of a fixed blade 4 and movable blades 1 and 2 and incorporates a system for selectively moving each movable blade so as to bring its tape supporting surface into coplanar relationship with the tape supporting surface of the fixed blade, to enable the width of the guide to be altered. This system may consist of cams 15, 18 turned by a shaft 14 and bearing on arms 16, 17 connected to the movable blades, or of a spring- loaded shaft having projections which may be brought into engagement with similar arms (Fig. 6, not shown). In suitable brake and drive release systems for use with the tape reader (Figs. 8, 9, not shown), the tape is arranged to pass under the armatures of two electromagnets, the armatures being activated when braking is required, to grip the tape. Simultaneously a pressing roller is withdrawn from engaging a tape driving roller by a further electromagnet, to disengage the drive.
