1,064,235. Aircraft. H. VON ENGEL. March 16, 1964 [April 4, 1963], No. 11105/64. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division F3] A stabilizing or control member for a flying body subjected to the action of an electrostatic field has an electrically conducting surface or surfaces forming one or more parts of a helix. In Fig. 3, for example, a stabilizer 7 is attached to a flying body 3, and is stated to diminish any tendency for an electrostatic field to divert the body from its course. The stabilizer is rotatable about the fore-and-aft axis of the body 6. Two such stabilizers may be hinged to the trailing edge of an annular wing, which may also be a ram-jet casing. Discrete parts only of the helix may be electrically conducting, these parts being embedded in a non-conductive support. Such stabilizers or control members may also provide some propulsive and lifting forces in an electrostatic field. Two such stabilizers may be attached at diametrically opposite points of the body, or two bodies may be attached one to each end of a stabilizer. A plurality of stabilizers may extend downwardly from hinge joints on the body. A kite-shaped body may have helices extending from both its upper and lower surfaces. In Fig. 10, a number of stabilizers 28 are attached to a body 27, and each terminates in a lifting aerofoil, the tip of which is adjustable for trimming or control purposes. Each stabilizer is rotatable about its axis, and the set of stabilizers may be rotatable about the body 27 to provide lift like a helicopter rotor. The flying body may itself set up an electrostatic field, by means of radio-active sheet metal, thermal ionization devices, or by the friction of a discharge nozzle on streams of gas or essential oils.
